SINGAPORE – Singapore's sustained competitiveness as a global trade hub hinges on continuous infrastructure investment, strategic port facility upgrades, and pervasive digitalization, according to Barnabas Gan, Group Chief Economist at RHB Bank. This assessment follows reports from logistics firms indicating a growing preference for Singapore as an alternative trade route amidst the global trade volatility sparked by sweeping US tariffs, as reported by Channel News Asia (CNA).
The period from January to April this year saw significant increases in cargo traffic. Port operator PSA Singapore reported handling approximately 14.1 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, a robust 6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Concurrently, Changi Airport registered a 2% rise in air freight movements during the same timeframe, according to data published on its website on May 22.
Maersk, a global leader in container shipping, confirmed an uptick in cargo handling within the region and anticipates this trend to persist into the second quarter, driven by increasing front-loading activity. Bhavan Vempati, the company’s Head of Asia Market, Ocean Product, highlighted Singapore's pivotal role in Maersk's network as a crucial transshipment hub for Asia. He observed that while some companies are adopting a "wait-and-see" approach, others are actively diverting cargo to alternative destinations and market segments in response to evolving tariff structures.
Echoing this sentiment, FedEx noted strong air freight demand across Southeast Asia. Bianca Wong, the company’s Vice President of Southeast Asia Operations, underscored the city-state's inherent advantage. "When Southeast Asia grows, we invariably see more volume coming to Singapore as transshipments," she explained.
The efficient movement of goods through Singapore's ports and airports is not merely a matter of physical infrastructure but also relies heavily on the underlying technological backbone, particularly in data transmission and operational control. High-performance cables are indispensable for this intricate network. For instance, fiber optic cables are critical for transmitting vast amounts of data at lightning speeds, enabling real-time tracking of shipments, automated crane operations, and the seamless integration of logistics software. These cables, which transmit data as pulses of light through thin strands of glass or plastic, offer unparalleled bandwidth and immunity to electromagnetic interference, making them ideal for secure and rapid communication across sprawling port facilities and international air freight networks. Similarly, robust power cables are essential for supplying electricity to operate everything from colossal container cranes and automated guided vehicles to sophisticated data centers and lighting systems throughout the port and airport infrastructure. The choice of cable – whether it's a shielded control cable for automation, a high-voltage power cable for heavy machinery, or a data cable for intricate sensor networks – directly impacts the reliability and efficiency of these critical operations.
Mr. Gan of RHB further emphasized that forging strong partnerships within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be instrumental in helping Singapore’s ports sustain their preeminent position as a primary trading hub.
In a proactive move to bolster connectivity, FedEx launched a new direct cargo flight from Singapore to the US on April 15, concurrently announcing further investments in its air connectivity networks. Meanwhile, PSA is channeling investments into advanced technology, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize vessel turnaround times and ensure the unhindered flow of goods. These technological advancements, underpinned by reliable cabling infrastructure, are key to enhancing operational efficiency and maintaining Singapore's competitive edge in the global supply chain.
