The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has welcomed the Seaspan Montevideo, one of the inaugural vessels arriving under the newly launched Gemini Cooperation. This milestone introduces the North America Shuttle service, a direct route linking Jacksonville with Cartagena, Colombia, while seamlessly connecting to Gemini’s expansive global network.
The service makes weekly calls at JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal, where terminal operations are managed by SSA Atlantic. Beyond Colombia, the Gemini network facilitates transshipment connections to key global markets, including Asia, Europe, South and Central America, Oceania, and the Caribbean.
To support this enhanced connectivity, JAXPORT continues to invest in upgrading its terminal infrastructure. A critical yet often overlooked component of these improvements is the cable systems embedded throughout port operations. For example, port crane cables used in ship-to-shore and rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes must endure continuous mechanical stress, environmental exposure, and high-frequency bending. These cables are vital in transmitting power and data, ensuring safe, efficient crane performance during vessel loading and unloading operations.
The Gemini Cooperation includes 290 vessels with a combined capacity of 3.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), offering 26 mainline services and 32 shuttle services. This extensive coverage provides shippers with greater flexibility, access to new markets, and faster, more reliable service schedules.
“Our new connectivity through Gemini provides even more options for customers seeking to move cargo through the Southeast U.S.,” said Robert Peek, Chief Commercial Officer at JAXPORT. “The service offers flexible transshipment, access to emerging markets, and competitive transit times backed by Gemini’s schedule reliability.”
In addition to expanding international routes, JAXPORT continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. Last month, the port welcomed the Quetzal, Crowley’s newest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership, reinforcing its role as a forward-looking logistics hub.
