Petronas, Malaysia's state-owned energy giant, has announced the successful sailaway of its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from the export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada. This facility is operated by the U.K.-headquartered energy powerhouse, Shell.

Following Shell's confirmation last week of the initial LNG cargo export from LNG Canada, Petronas has now proudly declared its own inaugural shipment from this pivotal British Columbia LNG project. The Malaysian firm's cargo embarked on its journey to Japan on July 7, aboard the 174,000-cubic meter (cbm) Puteri Sejinjang LNG vessel. This event signifies a major achievement for Petronas' operations in Canada.

Adif Zulkifli, Petronas’ Executive Vice President & CEO of Gas and Maritime Business, emphasized the significance of this moment: “PETRONAS’ first cargo sail away is the culmination of years of perseverance to realize our vision for Canadian LNG exports to the Asia Pacific region. We are privileged to commemorate this moment with LNG Canada, our other joint venture partners, the Haisla Nation, Kitimat community, and Canadians at large. PETRONAS is honored to be a part of this first-of-its-kind project in Canada.”

The LNG Canada project is a collaborative effort, with Shell serving as the operator and holding a 40% interest. Petronas, through its wholly-owned entity North Montney LNG Limited Partnership, holds a 25% equity stake. Other key partners include PetroChina, KOGAS, and Mitsubishi. The intricate network supporting such a large-scale energy export operation relies heavily on advanced cabling infrastructure, crucial for transmitting data, controlling machinery, and distributing power across the vast facility. From fiber optic cables ensuring high-speed communication between control rooms and processing units, to robust medium-voltage power cables delivering electricity to compressors and pumps, and specialized instrumentation cables monitoring critical parameters, reliable cable systems are the backbone of efficient and safe operations in LNG plants.

Situated on Canada’s west coast, the facility is designed to export LNG from two processing units, known as "trains," boasting a combined capacity of 14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). There are plans to expand this capacity to four trains in the future, further increasing the demand for resilient and high-performance industrial cabling.

Petronas highlights the plant's design as one of the lowest-emissions LNG export facilities globally. It incorporates energy-efficient gas turbines, sophisticated methane-leak detection and mitigation systems, and draws power from the BC Hydro grid, which is predominantly fueled by hydroelectric and other renewable energy sources. Consequently, the plant's greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity is estimated to be 35% lower than the world's best-performing existing LNG plants and approximately 60% below the global average.

During the facility's readiness phase for the first LNG vessel in April, details emerged about its comprehensive infrastructure. This includes a natural gas receiving and LNG production unit, a marine terminal capable of accommodating two LNG carriers, a dedicated tugboat dock, and advanced LNG loading lines. The plant also features LNG processing units, large storage tanks, a rail yard for transportation, a water treatment facility, and flare stacks, all interconnected by a complex web of power and control cables engineered to withstand harsh industrial environments and ensure continuous operation.
