The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) have reinforced their commitment to advancing the maritime sector by renewing their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This renewed agreement aims to deepen cooperation in crucial areas such as maritime digitalization, decarbonization, and talent development. Building on their successful collaboration since 2022, a significant outcome of this renewal is the planned establishment of a BV global innovation hub in Singapore. This hub is poised to be a nexus for the research and application of emerging technologies with far-reaching multi-industry impact. Key focus areas include developing robust cybersecurity standards and guidelines for maritime operations, alongside the design and integration of cutting-edge battery technologies and fuel cell systems.
The collaboration extends to fostering innovative digital and decarbonization solutions. Initiatives include the deployment of smart ship systems and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance the precision and efficiency of vessel inspections. Furthermore, the partnership will explore the use of robotics for in-water applications, minimizing human exposure to hazardous environments and improving maintenance protocols.
The Critical Role of Cabling in Maritime Innovation
The advancements discussed—from smart ship systems and AI integration to new battery technologies and fuel cell systems—all fundamentally rely on sophisticated cabling infrastructure. In the maritime environment, where extreme conditions such as corrosion, vibration, and temperature fluctuations are common, the selection and installation of cables are paramount.
Cables are the arteries of any modern vessel, transmitting power, data, and signals that enable complex operations. For smart ship systems, specialized data cables (like Ethernet or fiber optic cables) are essential for high-speed communication between sensors, control systems, and AI processing units. These cables must withstand electromagnetic interference (EMI) and maintain signal integrity over long distances. The integration of AI technologies for vessel inspection, for instance, requires robust data pathways to transmit high-resolution imagery and sensor data to central processing units, often necessitating high-bandwidth communication cables.
The push towards electrification and the adoption of new battery technologies and fuel cell systems introduces new demands for power cables. These cables must be capable of handling significant current loads, often at higher voltages, while ensuring safety and minimizing energy loss. They need to be fire-resistant, low-smoke, and halogen-free (LSZH) to protect crew and minimize damage in case of a fire. Furthermore, the increasing complexity of onboard systems means a dense network of control cables for actuators, valves, and other critical components. Even wind-assisted propulsion systems require intricate cabling for their control mechanisms and power transmission if they integrate generators. The longevity and reliability of these cables directly impact a vessel's operational efficiency, safety, and compliance with stringent maritime regulations. Without high-quality, purpose-built cables, the promise of maritime innovation cannot be fully realized.
To support the maritime workforce, BV will continue its involvement in vital industry manpower programs. These include the MPA Global Internship Award, the MaritimeONE Internship and Scholarship Programs, and the Career Conversion Program, as confirmed by MPA.
Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, emphasized Singapore's robust innovation ecosystem: "Singapore has a strong innovation ecosystem that brings together researchers, start-up entrepreneurs, and tech companies to collaborate with class societies such as BV to deploy AI, autonomy, and cybersecurity. We are pleased to partner Bureau Veritas, reaffirming our shared commitment to collaborate on maritime talent development and advancement in digitalisation, innovation, and decarbonisation in the maritime sector."
Hinda Gharbi, Group CEO of BV, echoed this sentiment: "This renewed collaboration with MPA reflects our continued commitment to support the maritime industry’s priorities in digitalisation, decarbonisation, and talent development. By combining MPA’s leadership in maritime innovation with Bureau Veritas’s extensive global experience and technical expertise, we aim to contribute to the advancement of sustainable and resilient solutions. We look forward to the positive impact this partnership will continue to have on the industry’s future."
Notably, in April 2023, MPA signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with eight classification societies, including Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, signaling a broad commitment to collaborative efforts in maritime digitalization and decarbonization. At that time, Teo Eng Dih highlighted the imperative for collaboration: "With the rapid changes brought about by decarbonisation and digitalisation, there is a need for collaboration to learn from one another, partner with likeminded stakeholders to build capabilities, and accelerate the development and adoption of new technologies."
