As part of a broader strategy to upgrade operational infrastructure and integrate sustainable technologies, APM Terminals Moín in Costa Rica has embarked on a comprehensive modernization initiative aimed at enhancing access to its terminal.

Launched in April 2025, the project centers on revamping the terminal’s main entrance to streamline landside operations. Key improvements include the construction of modernized control booths, deployment of advanced traffic management systems, installation of biometric authentication tools, implementation of secondary inspection lanes, and the development of a dedicated return route for vehicles.

These enhancements are designed to replace the terminal’s legacy system, which previously relied on static verification points for managing container appointments and driver credentials. By shifting to automated and real-time validation systems, APM Terminals anticipates significant gains in cargo throughput and operational safety.

“Incorporating smart technology enables us to optimize efficiency without compromising the safety of our personnel or cargo,” stated APM Terminals.

In line with its commitment to innovation, APM Terminals Moín has also pursued a series of digital and sustainable upgrades since 2024. These include digitization of container and access data, electrification of ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, deployment of smart optical character recognition (OCR) for STS cranes, twistlock automation, non-intrusive cargo scanning systems, LTE network enhancements, network infrastructure migration, and the implementation of truck alignment systems beneath STS cranes.

Notably, the success of these systems depends on reliable and durable electrical and communication cabling. In high-demand port environments, specialized cabling such as port crane cables and data transmission cables ensures stable power delivery and accurate signal relay across automated systems. These cables must resist abrasion, moisture, and oil exposure while maintaining performance in high-flex, mobile applications—an essential requirement in environments with automated cranes, biometric tools, and dynamic sensor arrays.

José Rueda, Managing Director of APM Terminals Moín, remarked, “This project represents a pivotal milestone in our modernization efforts. Through infrastructure upgrades and smart technology integration, we’re strengthening operational agility, safety, and the overall experience for our clients and transport partners.”

Elsewhere, APM Terminals and Hateco Group recently celebrated the opening of a new terminal in Haiphong, Vietnam. The two parties also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expand their strategic collaboration in port operations and logistics investment across Haiphong and future key regions in Vietnam.
